Saddle Rock Grist Mill
historic place
The Saddle Rock Grist Mill, located in North Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, is a historic tidal mill. It was constructed around 1700, with a new mill built in 1715 after an earlier structure was destroyed by fire. This mill was vital for grinding grain and corn, supporting the agricultural economy of Long Island. Overlooking Little Neck Bay, the mill remained in private hands, primarily with the Udall family, until 1950. Louise Udall Skidmore Eldridge, a descendant and the last private owner, donated the property. Nassau County acquired the mill in 1955. The mill was later restored to its mid-19th-century appearance and operated as a local history museum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Saddle Rock Grist Mill stands as one of the few remaining tidal mills in the country, representing an important part of the region's early economic life.
