1964-1965 New York World's Fair Carousel
historic place
In Queens, New York, within Flushing Meadows Corona Park, stands a historic carousel. This attraction was a notable part of the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair, an international exposition held on this very site. The carousel itself was a late addition to the fair, officially opening in July of 1964. Its creation involved combining two distinct carousels that previously operated in Coney Island. The ride features 72 intricately hand-carved wooden animals. Providing its distinctive soundtrack are two vintage German band organs, with one recognized as among the largest in the world. For the fair's second season in 1965, the carousel received a refreshed and brighter paint scheme. Remarkably, this carousel continues to operate today within Flushing Meadows Corona Park. It stands as one of the few physical remnants of the expansive 1964-1965 New York World's Fair still located on its original grounds in Queens. This historic carousel offers a direct connection to that significant event.
