Elmhurst Avenue Subway Station (IND)

historic place

The Elmhurst Avenue Subway Station, an Independent Subway System stop in Queens, New York, opened on December 31, 1936. This station was a key part of the eastward expansion of the IND Queens Boulevard Line. Engineers Robert Ridgway and Aaron I. Raisman were responsible for its design. The station's platforms are notable for their blue tile band with "ELMHURST" captions, a feature of the Independent Subway System's color-coded navigation system. It is configured with four tracks and two side platforms, primarily serving local trains. The opening of the Elmhurst Avenue station played a significant role in the development of the Elmhurst neighborhood, helping transform it from a suburban area into a more urban community. Recognizing its historical importance, the station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 6, 2005. This designation underscores its enduring impact on New York City's transit infrastructure and local development.
