Carter, John, Farmstead

historic place

The John Carter Farmstead, a historic place in Youngstown, Niagara County, New York, includes a brick dwelling built in 1858 and a brick bank barn from 1857. John Carter, an English-born brick mason, constructed these buildings. He settled in Youngstown around 1850 and established the area's first brickyard. The farmhouse displays an Italianate style with Greek Revival elements. Beyond its agricultural function, the farmstead hosted community religious gatherings, particularly after local churches were destroyed during the War of 1812. The property remained with the Carter family for five generations, until 2005. Farming operations ceased in 1996. The John Carter Farmstead was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 30, 2007. This acknowledges its architectural importance and its contribution to local settlement and religious history.
