The Archibald McAllister House
historic place
The Archibald McAllister House, located in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, is known today as Fort Hunter Mansion. Archibald McAllister, a U.S. Army captain and Revolutionary War officer, purchased this property along the Susquehanna River in 1787. He built the original stone section, a cabin, in 1786. In 1814, he added a Federal-style stone dwelling. A historical marker details these constructions. Later additions included a rear wooden summer kitchen by Daniel Dick Boas in 1870, and Colonial Revival elements by Helen and John Reily around 1900. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This site, now a 40-acre historic house museum and park, illustrates architectural evolution and the lives of its past residents.
