Lift Lock No. 13
historical marker
Here in Mifflintown, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, you will find Lift Lock No. 13. This historical marker was erected in 2008 by the Counties of Mifflin and Juniata. Lift Lock No. 13 was an important part of the canal system, specifically the Juniata Main Line Canal. It was located at Macedonia Run. A lock keeper's house, built in 1860, stood adjacent to the lift lock. This house served as the lock keeper's residence between 1860 and 1889. The lock itself underwent excavation and restoration between October 2007 and March 2008. During this work, the entire wooden floor of the lock was found intact. Portions of the wooden lock gates and cast-iron gate valves were also discovered in excellent condition. The collapsed stone walls of the lock were reconstructed. Today, Lift Lock No. 13 serves as a centerpiece of the Lewistown Narrows Canal Park. It represents a key element of the region's historical transportation infrastructure.
