historical marker

This historical marker in Millerstown, Pennsylvania, commemorates 'The Canal Era' in Perry County. Erected in 2020, it marks the Perry County Bicentennial, spanning 1820 to 2020. The marker is located in Millerstown, within Perry County. It was placed by the Borough of Millerstown and the Historical Society of Perry County. Millerstown, founded in 1790, served as a transportation hub, with river arks and flatboats navigating the Juniata River. The Pennsylvania Legislature funded the Main Line Canal extension from Clarks Ferry to Lewistown in April 1827. This canal line began service in November 1829. The canal expanded markets for local produce and commodities, and allowed for cheaper, heavier goods to be obtained by Millerstown businesses. Coal, important for the local iron furnace, traveled by canal boat. The canal era ended by the late 19th century. Remnants of the canal can still be seen just south of Millerstown. This marker highlights the canal's significant historical role in the town's development and economy.
