Caldwell Hall

historic place

Caldwell Hall, a historic place in Abilene, Taylor County, was constructed in 1922. This stately three-story building on the Hardin-Simmons University campus was funded by Clifton M. Caldwell. Caldwell was a strong supporter of education and a lover of music, which influenced the building's design as a fine arts facility. Caldwell Hall exemplifies Classical Revival architecture in Abilene. Its features include giant order Corinthian pilasters, a rusticated first story, and pedimented entrances. The building was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places on March 23, 1992. Caldwell Hall has contributed significantly to educational efforts in Abilene, reflecting the philanthropic tendencies of the city's wealthiest citizens. Today, it continues its legacy by housing the university's School of Music.
