Hilton Hotel, Abilene, Texas
historic place
In Abilene, Taylor County, a historic place known today as the Windsor Hotel Apartments holds a significant past. This ten-story building was constructed in 1927 by the Abilene Hotel Company. It was then leased by Conrad Hilton and operated as the Hilton Hotel, notable as the second hotel to bear his name. From 1927 to 1945, the Hilton Hotel introduced a new standard of luxury to West Texas. After Hilton's lease ended in 1945, the building was renamed the Windsor Hotel. The Windsor building underwent renovation in 1992, with its facade and lower floors, including an exquisite ballroom, restored using original drawings. Initially, it provided retirement apartments, later expanding in 2015 to include tenants of all ages. This building's long history and continuous adaptation demonstrate its enduring importance to Abilene's downtown landscape.
