The Light House in Alamo Heights
historic place
The Light House, a historic place in Alamo Heights, Bexar County, Texas, was constructed in 1961. Designed by Brooks Martin with Harold Wong, it stands as a significant example of midcentury modernist residential architecture in the San Antonio area. The house was named for its original owners, Patsy and Walter Scott Light. It is located at the intersection of Morton Street and Argyle Avenue. The design features slender steel columns supporting a flat roof with deep overhangs, intended to shield the interior from the Texas sun. Its glass walls create the appearance of a glass jewel box within its garden setting. The design integrates the house with its surrounding landscape. In 1962, the Texas Society of Architects recognized Brooks Martin with an AIA Award of Merit for his work on the Light House. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Light House represents a notable architectural achievement from the early 1960s in Alamo Heights.
