Brewster County Courthouse and Jail
historic place
The Brewster County Courthouse and Jail in Alpine, Texas, are among the oldest buildings in the downtown area. Construction on the courthouse began in 1887, the same year Brewster County was created. The building was completed in 1888. These structures were the first permanent buildings for the newly organized county. They continue to serve in their original capacities today. Local contractor Tom Lovell is presumed to have designed the courthouse, which showcases a local interpretation of the Second Empire style. A historical marker, erected in 1965, notes that the courthouse served Buchel and Foley Counties until those areas were added to Brewster County. The courthouse square remains a community center for various events. This complex holds historical significance as the government seat for Brewster County, which is the largest county in Texas.
