Chambersea
historic place
Chambersea is a historic place in Anahuac, Chambers County, Texas. The house was built in 1845. It served as the home of Thomas Jefferson Chambers, an early civic and business leader. Chambers was also the Surveyor General of Texas in 1829 and the sole superior judge of Texas before 1836. His love for Texas was proclaimed by a "Star" window in the west gable of the house. The modest board-and-batten pioneer house features a graceful, spiral exterior stairway at the front. This property, surrounded by plantings, a white lattice summer house, barns, and outbuildings, was the center of a plantation. Thomas Jefferson Chambers was assassinated here in 1863. A historical marker was erected at Chambersea in 1968. Chambersea is historically important for its connection to Thomas Jefferson Chambers, for whom Chambers County is named, and its representation of early Texas architecture and plantation life.
