Jones County Courthouse

historic place

The Jones County Courthouse is located in Anson, Texas. Jones County was established in 1858 by the Seventh Texas Legislature, named for Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas. The county's formal organization was postponed until 1881 due to historical circumstances. Jones City, later renamed Anson, became the permanent county seat. Prior to the current structure, the county utilized a small frame building, then a purchased hotel in 1884, followed by an 1886 brick courthouse that served for 24 years. The present courthouse was completed in 1910, designed by Elmer G. Withers. It exhibits Beaux Arts styling, with influences from the Arts and Crafts movement evident in decorative painting uncovered during a 1990s rehabilitation. Key features include a statue of Lady Justice atop its domed clock tower and pedimented porticoes with Ionic columns. Constructed of brick and Pecos red sandstone, the Jones County Courthouse was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2000. This building continues to serve as the center of government for Jones County.
