1918 State Office Building and 1933 State Highway Building
historic place
Austin, Texas, is home to the 1918 State Office Building and the 1933 State Highway Building. The 1918 State Office Building, designed by Atlee B. Ayres, was completed in 1918. This five-story structure initially housed state departments, including the General Land Office. The 1933 State Highway Building, completed in 1933, was built for the Texas Highway Department. This agency, formed in 1917, organized road routes for a growing automobile culture. Designed by Carleton Adams, this Art Deco building was Texas's first skyscraper for state government offices. It was later named for State Highway Engineer Dewitt Carlock Greer. Both buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. These structures reflect significant periods in Texas's administrative and infrastructure history.
