1928 Granite Water Fountain

historical marker

The 1928 Granite Water Fountain is located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. The State of Texas erected this historical marker in 1928. It was installed over an artesian well, replacing an earlier cast-iron fountain from around 1903. The granite fountain featured eight spigots, providing access to mineralized well water, which many believed had medicinal properties. After more than fifty years, the fountain was shut off in 1980. This was due to the well water no longer meeting updated quality standards. In 1996, the granite fountain was restored and moved to its current location, where it was connected to the municipal water supply. This fountain represents a historical point of public water access and changing public health standards in Austin.
