301 E. Sixth Street, Austin, Texas
historical marker
This historical marker at 301 East Sixth Street, in Austin, Travis County, Texas, commemorates a significant local business. In 1897, Joe Lung opened the Joe Lung Café at this location. Joe Lung, who arrived in Austin after working on California railroad gangs, established a restaurant known for its classic Southern American fare, not Chinese food. His customers called it 'a hash-house with heart.' Joe Lung also built a reputation for trust. He offered a unique service, allowing farm families to leave their money with him for safekeeping in his 'little red box.' He also lent money to individuals, particularly minorities, who could not access traditional banks. These loans were based on a handshake, with the understanding to 'Pay me when you can.' Joe Lung reportedly never lost money through this generous practice. This site represents a place of community trust and support in Austin's commercial history.
