Anderson Stadium, Austin, Texas

historic place

Anderson Stadium, located in East Austin, Travis County, Texas, is a historic place also known as Yellow Jacket Stadium. It was constructed in 1953 as the dedicated football and track and field facility for L.C. Anderson High School. During a period of racial segregation, L.C. Anderson High School was Austin's only public high school for African American students. The stadium served as an important public space and community center for the East Austin Black community. In 1971, the stadium closed as part of a school integration plan. The football field was later paved over for a parking lot in 1972. The stadium was restored in the 1990s, with efforts led by alumnus Thomas Henderson. Anderson Stadium was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022. It is recognized as the last extant high school football stadium in Texas built exclusively for African Americans.
