historic place
This is the Arnold Bakery Building, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. Richard Arnold, a German immigrant, established a bakery on this site in 1892. The current building, a commercial structure, was constructed in 1906. The Arnold Bakery served the central east Austin neighborhood, known as Robertson Hill. This area was historically ethnically diverse. The building functioned as a bakery, and later served as a restaurant and bar for the African-American community during a period of segregation. The Arnold family remained merchants in the neighborhood for over fifty years. The building's period of significance is from 1906 to 1953. In 2000, the building underwent renovation as part of an urban renewal project. The Arnold Bakery Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. This site is historically significant for its commercial role and its reflection of Austin's evolving community.
