Ashford McGill House

historic place

You are at the Ashford McGill House in Zilker Park, in Austin, Travis County, Texas. It was originally built in the 1870s for Austin pioneer Ashford McGill. It is a native limestone structure. The house and surrounding property were later purchased by Andrew J. Zilker. He conveyed the land to the city for a park in 1931. The house was remodeled by the Federal Civil Works Administration for use as a multiple purpose park building. Today it shows 1930s-era detailing, including a pergola-covered courtyard. It was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1990 by the Texas Historical Commission. You can see the marker at the site. The available record does not give more detail about daily use. The house matters because it links an early pioneer home to the creation of Zilker Park.
