historical marker

Austin High School, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, began its history in September 1881. It is recognized as one of the oldest public high schools west of the Mississippi River. The school's first dedicated campus, an ornate red brick building, was completed in 1900 at 9th and Trinity Streets. This site is known as the John T. Allan Campus. John T. Allan's contributions in the 1890s supported a manual-training department at Austin High. John T. Allan Junior High School, named in his honor, opened in 1916 on Rio Grande Street. In 1925, Austin High School relocated to the John T. Allan Junior High School campus on Rio Grande. The former Austin High building at 9th and Trinity then became John T. Allan Junior High. Austin High remained at the Rio Grande campus until 1975. The Texas Historical Commission erected a historical marker at the John T. Allan Campus in 1981. This marker signifies the site's enduring role in Austin's public education.
