Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary
historical marker
In Austin, Travis County, Texas, a historical marker was erected in 2002 by the Texas Historical Commission. It designates the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary as an American Presbyterian and Reformed Historical Site. The seminary opened on October 1, 1902, to educate ministers for the Presbyterian Church in the Southwest. It built upon earlier work like the Austin School of Theology, which operated from 1884 to 1895. Thornton Rogers Sampson was appointed its first president in 1900. The seminary initially held classes in East Austin. In 1908, it relocated to its current site, adjacent to the University of Texas at Austin campus, to foster academic collaboration. The marker recognizes its historical significance to the Presbyterian and Reformed tradition.
