Austin US Courthouse
historic place
The Austin US Courthouse, located in Travis County, Texas, is a historic place. This four-story building was constructed between 1935 and 1936, opening on September 22, 1936. It exemplifies Depression-era Moderne architecture, also known as PWA Moderne, featuring Art Moderne and Art Deco finishes. The exterior is clad in cream-colored limestone. The courthouse originally housed the Austin division of the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. Its construction was part of federal efforts to address the economic Depression of the 1930s, receiving funding from the Public Works Administration. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. After federal courts moved to a new building in 2012, Travis County acquired the historic courthouse in 2016. Since 2020, it has housed the county probate courts. This building serves as a tangible example of federal architecture from the mid-1930s, illustrating the government's presence and its role in public works during that period.
