Barnes, Charles W., House

historic place

The Charles W. Barnes House, once a notable historic place in Austin, Travis County, Texas, was constructed in 1885. This two-story, raised Victorian structure was built for Charles W. Barnes, a wholesale and retail grocer. Located at 1105 East 12th Street, it was considered one of the largest and most architecturally significant residential buildings in East Austin. Its design, featuring a monumental entrance on the north facade with wooden steps leading to a one-story projecting porch supported by turned columns, reflected the owner's prosperity and social standing. The house had a full basement with limestone walls, and its front entrance included a two-panel double door with arched upper panels and a transom. The Charles W. Barnes House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 1985. While the specific historical marker text for this site is not available, the house served as a significant example of Victorian architecture in late 19th-century Austin. The original structure has since been torn down.
