Battle Hall, Austin, Texas
historic place
Battle Hall, in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is a historic place completed in 1911. Architect Cass Gilbert designed it as the University of Texas's first dedicated library. Its Spanish-Mediterranean Revival style, with limestone and a red tile roof, became the signature architectural motif for the University's "Forty Acres" campus. This design set a new standard for campus architecture. Battle Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was also recognized by the American Institute of Architects. Today, it houses the John S. Chase Architecture and Planning Library. This site is historically significant for defining the architectural character of the University of Texas at Austin.
