Black Legislators Monument

The Black Legislators Monument is a historical marker located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. Erected in 2010 by the State of Texas, this black marble memorial honors fifty-two African American men. These individuals served in the Texas Constitutional Convention and the Texas Legislature during the Reconstruction era, in the last half of the 19th century. Their service represented the first significant political achievement by African American citizens in Texas. These legislators worked for issues such as protection from violence, voting rights, and education. Following Reconstruction, the number of Black legislators declined. By 1910, African Americans were no longer a significant political force in Texas. This monument recognizes their pioneering efforts during a pivotal time in Texas history.
