Briones, Genaro P. and Carolina, House

historic place

The Genaro P. and Carolina Briones House is a historic place in East Austin, Travis County, Texas. Construction of this unique home began in 1947 by Genaro P. Briones, who built it over a period of 14 years, with additions continuing into the late 1970s. The house features molded concrete and brightly tinted sculpted stucco surfaces. These surfaces imitate stone and wood, incorporating whimsical and floral motifs. Genaro Briones was influenced by Mexican craftsman Dionicio Rodriguez, known for the 'Faux Bois' technique, which sculpts concrete to resemble wood. The Briones House is considered the best-preserved work by Genaro Briones and is the largest example of tinted concrete ornamentation in Texas. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 7, 1998. This site represents a significant example of Mexican American artisanship in Austin.
