Brizendine House, Austin, Texas

historic place

The Brizendine House, a historic place in Austin, Texas, was built around 1870. John R. Brizendine, a carpenter, machinist, and miller, constructed this limestone house. Brizendine lived here until his death in 1914. The house is a simple Vernacular Rough Ashlar structure, reflecting Victorian influence. It represents the lifestyle of a late 19th-century working middle-class family in Austin. Mrs. Elizabeth Gordon purchased the home in 1928; her family resided there until 1972. In 1974, the Brizendine House was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A historical marker was erected that year. This house offers insight into Austin's 19th-century working-class history.
