Buddington-Benedict-Sheffield Compound
historical marker
The Buddington-Benedict-Sheffield Compound is located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. A historical marker was erected here in 2004 by the Texas Historical Commission. The main house of this compound was built around 1860 by Albert and Rebecca Buddington. They constructed it of limestone in the Early Texas architectural style. The Buddingtons, who had moved to Texas from New York, established a 40-acre homestead by the late 1860s. Albert Buddington was Austin's first butcher. In 1921, Dr. Harry Y. Benedict became a resident of the property. He was a University of Texas professor and later served as the university's president from 1927 until his death in 1937. Wilhelmine Sheffield purchased the property in the 1940s. She was an Austin realtor and appraiser who continued to add cottages to the compound. This site is recognized as the oldest home in Austin's North University neighborhood. It represents a continuum of residential development in this part of Austin.
