Cambridge Tower
historic place
Cambridge Tower, located in Travis County, Austin, opened on May 1, 1965. Constructed in 1964, this fifteen-story building was designed by Dallas architect Thomas Edward Stanley II, with landscape architect George Hunt. When it first opened, Cambridge Tower was Austin's tallest high-rise apartment building. It was marketed as a landmark of luxury, offering residents amenities like on-site dining, valet service, and concierge services. The building's design features the New Formalism architectural style, which incorporates classical elements such as high Grecian arches and decorative concrete block terraces with modern materials. In the late 1970s, Cambridge Tower transitioned from apartments to condominiums. On June 20, 2018, Cambridge Tower was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition acknowledges its largely unaltered condition, its role as an early example of New Formalist architecture in Austin, and its significance in offering a downtown residential option.
