Capitol Greenhouses

historical marker

The "Capitol Greenhouses" in Austin, Travis County, Texas, marks a site with a history of cultivating plants for the state. Four different greenhouse structures have stood on Capitol Square. These greenhouses provided plants and flowers for the Capitol grounds, the governor's mansion, the state cemetery, and public buildings. The first greenhouse was built in 1875. A second structure, built in 1908, burned during a 1925 blizzard. A temporary building then served until a fourth Capitol greenhouse was completed around 1941. This structure was removed from the grounds in February 1958.
