Carrington Bluff House
historical marker
The Carrington Bluff House, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is identified by a historical marker erected in 2018 by the Texas Historical Commission. Local merchant and land speculator L.D. Carrington acquired this property in 1854. He purchased it from Hannah Burnet, wife of David G. Burnet, the first president of the Republic of Texas. Carrington built a house on this site in the 1880s. The structure's current appearance reflects a 1911 remodel by owner Charles Morrison and a second-story addition during the 1920s and 1930s by owner Joseph O'Reilly. This vernacular house features a modified hip roof. Its location atop a bluff overlooking Shoal Creek provided views of downtown Austin and Pease Park. The house's position suggests it may have served as an early outpost, given that Indian Territory lay west of Shoal Creek until the 1880s. The Carrington Bluff House was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2018, acknowledging its architectural and historical significance.
