Carrington-Covert House

historic place

The Carrington-Covert House, a historic place in Austin, Travis County, was completed in the spring of 1857. Leonidas D. Carrington, who arrived in Austin in 1852, commissioned John Brandon to build this vernacular Greek Revival home. It was constructed of rough limestone ashlar. From 1857 to 1870, it served as the residence for Leonidas D. Carrington and his family. Later, from 1893 to 1898, the house functioned as the 'Texas Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.' The Covert family, a prominent Austin family, lived here from 1903 until 1936. The State of Texas acquired the property in 1968. The Texas Historical Commission restored the house in 1972. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1962. Today, the Carrington-Covert House serves as the headquarters for the Texas Historical Commission. This building represents a significant part of Austin's architectural and social history.
