Central Christian Church, Austin, Texas

historic place

Central Christian Church in Austin, Texas, is a historic place. The congregation was organized in 1847 by ten members of the Disciples of Christ Brotherhood, eight years after Austin was platted. By 1852, regular worship services were held in a local school building. Originally known as The Christian Church of Austin, the congregation acquired its first property at Eighth and Colorado Street. They worshiped there until moving to their current location in 1929. The church adopted its current name, Central Christian Church, in the early twentieth century. This occurred after other Disciples of Christ congregations formed in Austin. A historical marker for this site was erected in 1985 by the Texas Historical Commission. Central Christian Church remains a vital force in downtown Austin, recognized for its service and leadership as one of the city's oldest churches.
