Ten members of the Disciples of Christ Brotherhood established the congregation, eight years after Austin was platted. Initially known as the Christian Church of Austin, it held regular worship services in a local school building by 1852. The church adopted its current name, Central Christian Church, in the early twentieth century. The present Romanesque Revival building was completed in 1929 and dedicated on November 24. This structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The Texas Historical Commission erected a historical marker here in 1985. As one of Austin's oldest congregations, Central Christian Church has been a significant part of the city's historical fabric.
