Central Presbyterian Church, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, has a history dating to the city's early years. The congregation's roots trace to October 13, 1839, with Austin's first Presbyterian worship service. Builder Abner Cook, an early elder, helped secure the current property at Brazos and Eighth Street. A sanctuary was completed there in 1874. The church adopted its current name, Central Presbyterian Church, in 1983, after previously being known by other names like Southern Presbyterian Church. In 1988, the Texas Historical Commission erected a historical marker here. This recognizes the church's long presence and its contributions to Austin. Notable past members include Governor Francis R. Lubbock and author William Sidney Porter, known as O. Henry. The church continues its ministry and cultural events today, including free weekly concerts. This site reflects a continuous religious and civic thread in Austin's development.
