Chapel for the Children, Austin, Travis County
historic place
The Chapel for the Children, located in Austin, Travis County, is a historic place. It was completed in 1961 and dedicated on January 21, 1962. Austin architect David Graeber designed this chapel. It served the Austin State School, now known as the Austin State Supported Living Center. The chapel provided a dedicated space for religious services for its residents, many of whom were minors. An interfaith group, including the Protestant Austin Council of Church Women, the Austin Jewish Community Council, and the Catholic Ladies of Charity, led a statewide fundraising campaign. This effort raised over $100,000, with contributions from soldiers stationed in Germany. The chapel features an A-frame design with a 52-foot high skylighted ceiling and stained glass by Blossom Burns. It is recognized for its importance in architectural, disability, and social history.
