Colored Teachers State Association of Texas Building

historic place

In Austin, Texas, stands the Colored Teachers State Association of Texas Building, a historic place in Travis County. Erected in 1952, this building was designed by John S. Chase, the first licensed African American architect in Texas. It served as the headquarters for the Colored Teachers State Association of Texas, an organization founded in 1884. The association achieved civil rights victories for African American students and teachers in segregated Texas, advocating for equal pay and opposing school segregation. The one-story building features an asymmetrical contemporary design, with a flat roof and concrete masonry. The association used this headquarters until its dissolution in 1966. A historical marker was erected here in 2016. This site is important for understanding the fight for educational equality and civil rights in Texas.
