Their first synagogue building was erected there in 1884. Joe Koen began a 45-year term as president of the congregation in 1889. As the community grew, the congregation acquired new land in 1953 at Shoal Creek Boulevard and 38th Street. Administrative and school buildings were completed in 1957. A new, larger sanctuary, accommodating 650 worshippers, was dedicated in 1967. Congregation Beth Israel continues to serve as a central point for Austin's Jewish community, reflecting over a century of Jewish life in the city.
