Elisabet Ney, born January 26, 1833, was a renowned sculptor. She achieved fame in 19th-century Europe, notably as the first woman admitted to Munich's Royal Academy of Fine Arts to study sculpture. Ney emigrated to Texas by 1872. In 1892, she established her studio, Formosa, in Austin, Travis County. There, she sculpted significant Texans, including statues of Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston for the State Capitol. Elisabet Ney passed away on June 29, 1907. Her Austin studio was preserved as the Elisabet Ney Museum. A historical marker, erected in 1968 by the State Historical Survey Committee, commemorates her legacy as a notable sculptor in Texas.
