Federal Office Building
historic place
The Federal Office Building in Austin, Texas, located in Travis County, was constructed between 1963 and 1964, with completion in 1964. This eleven-story building is a notable example of mid-century modern civic architecture. It gained historical significance as the local office for President Lyndon B. Johnson during his presidency from 1965 to 1969, and immediately afterward. President Johnson conducted important national meetings within these offices, including discussions in 1966 that contributed to the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty, or SALT. In 1999, the building was renamed the J.J. Pickle Federal Building, honoring Congressman J.J. 'Jake' Pickle. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. This site represents a period of federal expansion and presidential activity in Austin.
