Fischer House, Austin, Texas

historic place

The Fischer House, located in Austin, Texas, is a historic place in Travis County. Prussian native Joseph Fischer, born in 1826, constructed this home for his family in 1882. He built it with the assistance of his son, Francis. Both Joseph and Francis Fischer were skilled stonemasons. They established one of Austin's prominent masonry contracting businesses. Their work included the construction of many notable buildings in the area, such as the Texas Capitol. The Fischer House itself showcases their craftsmanship through its elaborate ornamentation of brick and native limestone. It is designed in a High Victorian Italianate style. The Fischer family owned the home until 1938. The Texas Historical Commission erected a historical marker for the Fischer House in 1982, recognizing it as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. This site is important for understanding Austin's architectural development and the contributions of its early master builders.
