Fogel, Seymour and Barbara, House

historic place

The Fogel, Seymour and Barbara, House in Austin, Travis County, is a historic place known as "Southwind." The structure began as a stone barn, built around 1880 by physician and inventor George Peter Hachenberg. In the early 1950s, artist and educator Seymour Fogel, who moved to Austin in 1946 to teach at the University of Texas, converted the barn into his family residence and studio. Fogel designed and built the home, with input from Austin architect Harold "Bubi" Jessen, completing it in 1953. This conversion transformed the 19th-century barn into a modern residence with Usonian influences. The Fogel House is significant for its association with Seymour Fogel and as an example of innovative architectural adaptation. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 2, 2003.
