The French Legation State Historic Site is located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. This site was established in 1841. It served as a private home and diplomatic outpost for Alphonse Dubois, the French chargé d'affaires to the Republic of Texas. France had recognized Texas as a sovereign nation. Dubois resided here from 1841 to 1842. In 1848, Dr. Joseph W. Robertson purchased the property, and his family lived here for decades. The State of Texas acquired the house in 1949. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas then managed the site, opening it as a museum in 1956. The historical marker for this site was erected in 1967. Today, the French Legation State Historic Site is managed by the Texas Historical Commission, preserving one of Austin's oldest houses and its unique diplomatic history.
