Gerhard-Schoch House

The Gerhard-Schoch House, in Austin, Travis County, Texas, was built in 1887 for merchant Philip Henry Gerhard and his wife Lena. Contractor Herman S. Love constructed the house. It is considered Austin's first two-story brick-veneered structure, and was enlarged in 1891. In 1912, the Gerhards' daughter Clara and her husband, Dr. Eugene Paul Schoch, inherited the home. Dr. Schoch was a notable University of Texas chemical engineering professor, instrumental in establishing the university's Chemical Engineering Department in 1916. The Texas Historical Commission erected a marker for the Gerhard-Schoch House in 1974, recognizing it as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. This site is significant for its early building innovation and its association with a prominent University of Texas figure.
