Green Pastures, Austin, Texas

historic place

Green Pastures, a historic place in Travis County, Austin, Texas, originated as a Victorian home. Dr. E. W. Herndon built the house between 1894 and 1895 on over 20 acres of land. In 1916, lawyer Henry Faulk and his wife Martha, known as Mattie, became residents. Their daughter, Mary Faulk Koock, and her husband Chester Koock, opened Green Pastures for public dining in 1946. This establishment notably served customers of all races, 18 years before desegregation laws mandated it in Austin. The property was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1976. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Today, Green Pastures is also known for its resident peacocks. This site reflects a significant part of Austin's architectural and social history.
