Henry G. Madison Cabin
historical marker
The Henry G. Madison Cabin is a historical marker located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. Henry Green Madison, Austin's first African American city council member, built this cabin around 1863. Madison, born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1843, came to Austin as a freedman in the early 1860s. He lived here with his wife, Louisa Green, and their children. The cabin was originally located at 807 East 11th Street. In 1886, Madison built a larger house that enclosed the cabin, concealing it for decades. A demolition crew rediscovered the original log structure in 1963. It was then moved to Rosewood Neighborhood Park and reassembled in 1973. The Texas Historical Commission erected this historical marker for the Henry G. Madison Cabin in 1974. This site recognizes Henry G. Madison's significant civic contributions to Austin.
