Hofheintz-Reissig Store
historic place
The Hofheintz-Reissig Store, located in Austin, Texas, is a historic place. It was built between 1850 and 1875 for German immigrant Henry Hofheintz. Hofheintz, born in 1822, arrived in Texas in 1845. He was known for hauling freight by wagon between Mexico, San Antonio, and Austin. The structure operated as a grocery and dry goods store for nearly 100 years. A one-story addition was later constructed, serving as a saloon and a residence. After Henry Hofheintz's death in 1880, his eldest child, Catherine Louise, and her husband, Adolph Reissig, inherited the store. The property remained with the family until 1966. The Hofheintz-Reissig Store serves as a reminder of Austin's small, residential business establishments and features German-influenced architecture from the 19th century. A historical marker was erected at this site in 1983 by the Texas Historical Commission.
