historical marker

Hyde Park, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is recognized by a historical marker erected in 1989 by the Texas Historical Commission. This area began in 1891 as Austin's first planned suburb, developed by Monroe M. Shipe. Shipe established an electric streetcar line, connecting the neighborhood to downtown Austin and enabling its early growth. Early Hyde Park featured Victorian and Craftsman style homes. The neighborhood was once home to the State Fair of Texas. Sculptor Elisabet Ney's studio, built here in 1892, now operates as a museum. The Hyde Park Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This location illustrates Austin's early suburban development.
