historical marker
The J. Frank Dobie House is located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. This historical site was home to James Frank Dobie, an eminent Texas author, educator, and folklorist. Dobie was known for his writings about rural Texas life and his work to preserve Texas folklore. The house itself was built in the Colonial Revival style between 1925 and 1926. J. Frank Dobie and his wife, Bertha, lived here from 1926 until his death in 1964. During his residency, the house served as his library and office, where he wrote many of his books. It was also a place for informal gatherings with his colleagues and students. In 1991, the Texas Historical Commission erected a historical marker at the J. Frank Dobie House. The house is recognized for its association with Dobie, whose work significantly documented the culture and traditions of Texas and the American Southwest.
