Jernigan, A. J., House

historic place

The A. J. Jernigan House, also known as Las Ventanas, is a historic place in Austin, Texas. It was constructed between 1875 and 1876 for A. J. Jernigan, who served as the Travis County Treasurer from 1873 to 1888 and again from 1894 to 1896. Master builder Abner Cook designed this two-story brick residence, built of handmade, sun-dried brick. The house exhibits a transitional architectural style, combining Greek Revival and Victorian elements. Its name, Las Ventanas, means "the windows," referring to its imaginatively pedimented windows and doors. Originally facing south, its entry now features a "Charleston Style" on Harthan Street. The house underwent expansions in the late 1880s and 1912. In the late 20th century, it served as commercial office space before being restored for residential use. A historical marker was erected at the site in 1967 by the State Historical Survey Committee. The A. J. Jernigan House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and a City of Austin Historic Landmark. This site reflects Austin's architectural development and its connection to a notable county official.
